HHR: What’s the first thing you tackle when taking on a project like this?
JK: I’ll come up with a plan so that everything is coordinated. I want to come up with a color scheme, design scheme and style I want to achieve in the room.
HHR: You’ll be given flooring options courtesy of Pacific Imports. What role does flooring play in determining the overall style of the room?
JK: Flooring has a lot to do with it, especially the color and the grain. Lighter flooring tends to look more cheery. And you can get a lot of neat contrast with the rest of the room if you go dark on the flooring. Whatever we choose, the finish and the color will tie into the whole style we’re trying to achieve.
HHR: Dial Lighting Gallery and Van’s Electric will be providing the lighting scheme. Why is lighting so important?
JK: The room should look nice both in the daytime and at night. To achieve this, we can create mood lighting and accents on wall pieces or features. With the right light level and the right type of lighting, we can also enhance the furniture and wall color.
HHR: That brings us to the color question. We know that’s your specialty. How do you plan to use the Benjamin Moore color options available to you to really improve the winning space?
JK: I’m not shy about using paint, so I plan to pick the best colors for the space overall. One of my favorite color choices is green. It’s almost neutral. I like browns and greens because you can put them with almost anything and they will look great.
HHR: Choosing the right furniture (and arranging it the right way) can do wonders for a space. Any thoughts on how you’ll transform the room with furniture from HomeWorld?
JK: I’ll look at the scale of the room first. I’ll also think about what the function of the room will be—whether the client will be using it for entertaining, relaxing, watching TV or even doing homework with the kids.
HHR: Finally, the icing on the cake: fabric, provided by Kreative Kamaaina. With unlimited colors and patterns available, how do you plan to use fabric to liven up the room?
JK: Fabric can be really fun. I plan to use fabrics on accents—pillows and window [treatments], for example. And I’m not one who likes to match. I like to intermix patterns and colors.
