Ahhh, summer. It’s the perfect time of year to take that much-needed getaway. But I’ve been wondering … does my green life have to go on vacation when I do? While preparing for a recent trip to San Francisco, land of the outlawed plastic bag, I found my answer. I was inspired to learn that there are many simple ways to travel greener. Check out a few of my favorite tips—they’re super easy to do on any trip, big or small.
Before Leaving Home
Unplug appliances, such as TVs, microwaves and computers, that drain electricity when not in use.
If you have an air-conditioning system, remember to turn it off.
Turn the hot-water heater to its lowest setting.
Arrange to stop newspaper delivery while you are away, or find out if the papers can be donated.
Making Travel Arrangements
Choose an e-ticket instead of a paper ticket.
If possible, take the most direct flight to your destination (you’ll support the cause by boarding a plane that uses less fuel).
Rent the smallest car that will comfortably accommodate you, or ask about alternative-fuel vehicles.
Consider booking a hotel within walking distance of the sights you want to see (bonus: you’ll get exercise).
In the Hotel
Treat your hotel like you would your own home. When leaving the room, turn off the air conditioning, TV, lights and any other electronic devices.
Let housekeeping know you’d like to reuse sheets and towels instead of having them changed every day.
Bring toiletries from home to avoid using the hotel’s prepackaged ones.
Ask the front desk where to dispose of recyclable items.
Out and About
If you can’t walk to your destination, try using public transportation or biking.
Use a multi-use digital camera instead of a disposable, single-use model.
Carry a refillable water bottle.
Sample local foods and eat at sit-down restaurants to reduce takeout trash.
Buy locally made souvenirs to bring back home for friends and family.
