Before its transformation, this courtyard “lacked personality, warmth and a sense of place,” says David Staub of Tropical Garden Accents. Now, it’s a gorgeous, welcoming oasis. “The moment you walk up to the gate … you hear the tranquility of the fountain and feel relaxed. You look forward to what awaits. You step into the courtyard and experience the beauty of tropical foliage in rustic ceramics on the courtyard floor and at the entrance to the front door.”
What makes this makeover so remarkable? It was done using container gardening. No large landscape overhaul was necessary, but the process did require creative and careful thought. By placing potted arrangements in key places throughout this space, Staub was able to create a more inviting, livable area.
Read on to discover a few rules of thumb for creating your very own courtyard haven.
 | Pick great plants. “Certain plants are happier in containers than others,” says Staub. Low-water, low-maintenance xeriscape plants are the best options.
 | Mix it up. “You want something in the design to really wow the senses,” says Staub. A fountain like this one is a great option. It creates visual interest as well as tranquil sound.
 | Combine colors and textures. Bold burgundy, bright white, and leafy green add visual interest to this arrangement. A garden expert can advise you on what plants look best in the same pot.
 | Find your style. “The style of pottery you choose should match the style of the home itself,” says Staub. Whether your preference is traditional Hawaiian, modern Asian or something less definable, there’s a container to complement your unique space.
 | Choose the right pot. A ceramic pot, fired at a high temperature for maximum durability, is your best bet. Look for large holes located at the bottom of the piece to ensure proper drainage.
